Stroll the Riverwalk from Jefferson Avenue to Hillside Road to share many memories with families and organizations that have contributed to the winding brick path since it began opening  in 1981 to commemorate the city’s sesquicentennial anniversary.

Mosey over to Fredenhagen Park and follow the extension along the DuPage River to discover messages and other attractive features such as the Jaycees Gazebo that bring to life generous community spirit.  In fact, anyone who visits Naper Settlement, Chicagoland’s outdoor history museum, will connect the fact that community spirit began here all the way back to the days when risk-taking Captain Joe Naper and his family arrived on the banks of the DuPage River.

With plenty of attention to detail, on Sat., Aug. 16, Bobby Clinkert proposed to Sarah Kutz at the Jaycees Gazebo along the Riverwalk near Fredenhagen Park.

Clearly, Sarah said, “Yes!”

Monday Clinkert sent an e-mail with the photo to Riverwalk Administrator Jan Erickson who arranged to have it posted on the Riverwalk website under “Weddings.

“…Just wanted to pass along a message and thank the City of Naperville for offering me a beautiful place to get engaged to my fiancé!” wrote Clinkert. “Saturday, August 16, was the day that I proposed in a beautiful gazebo on the Riverwalk. It was an unforgettable day and I am so thankful to live in such a wonderful city! In fact, we have both grown up and lived in Naperville our whole lives!”

The e-mail was signed, “Thank you! Bobby Clinkert and Sarah Kutz.”

For more information about availability and fees of wedding spaces along the Riverwalk, e-mail Anne Emond, Community Relations Associate, Naperville Park District, ataemond@napervilleparks.org or call her  at (630) 848-3608.

Jaycees Gazebo since 2001

On a related historical note, the Jaycees Gazebo was built to enhance the Riverwalk extension (Washington to Hillside) with a contribution to Riverwalk 2000 fundraising campaign led by Ed Channell and Glen Ekey. In August 2001, many Naperville Jaycees and Roosters met at the then-new Jaycees Gazebo for a photo taken by Jo Lundeen. The photo to promote the Jaycees Last Fling was featured on the front page of the first issue of Positively Naperville in September 2001. Thanks, Jaycees!
