2014 Intern Video from NCTV17 on Vimeo.
Julius Caesar once said, “Experience is the teacher of all things.”
While there is no doubt we gather information from a wide variety of sources— teachers, our parents, books, even television—true knowledge comes when we apply that information and experience the outcome. It’s like learning to drive, there’s just no replacement for hours behind the wheel.
This summer 16 local students, both high school and college, are spending time in a hands-on internship program at NCTV17 designed to teach them skills they will need for a career in TV journalism, video production, or marketing.
Throughout the summer, all of the interns are gaining experience with the cameras, lighting and editing equipment. They are sitting in weekly discussions with key members of our community talking about subjects like leadership, volunteerism, ethics and values in the workplace, and communication. They are participating in studio shoots and operating cameras at concerts. They are shadowing news reporters from capturing the interview to editing the fi nal story. They are experiencing exactly what it’s like to be on staff at a TV station.
And just as importantly, they’re learning how to navigate around summer construction to make it to work on time, how to introduce themselves with a strong handshake and good eye contact, how to speak up in staff meetings, how to dress appropriately, and what shoes not to wear when you’re on your feet for 8 hours.
Whether our interns go on to become an anchor, camera operator or producer, or find some other profession that’s their passion, our goal is to provide them with an opportunity to take the world of work on a test drive and gain valuable experience from those inevitable bumps in the road.
