Finally Naperville has a race that we all can run. Judd Kendall VFW Post 3873 is sponsoring a .1K race to benefit the VFW National Home For Children. You read that correctly, .1K.

It is a short run that will go a long way to help Veteran and Military families at the VFW National Home. Even I —who everyone knows is against vigorous physical exercise— am participating in this grueling, demanding event. I will be wearing tights, a tutu and a top hat. That in itself should be reason enough to participate.

The date is September 21, 2014.

The race will start promptly at 10:01AM. The cost is $20 for early registration and $25 the day of the race. Early registration guarantees a shirt and a .1K sticker you can proudly put on your rear window. I can’t wait to put that sticker on my car to be a part of the in-crowd with 13.1 and 26.2 stickers on their rear windows.

Find a registration form and all pertinent information at www.napervfw3873.org.

The VFW National Home For Children is located in Eaton Rapids, MI. It helps families by giving them hope and honors their service. We visit there in October every year. I can honestly say that I have never been at a place where everyone is so happy. When we leave, everyone has a warm feeling about what they do for families. Donate Locally

Over the past several months I have been asked what organizations that help Veterans and military to donate to. With over 65,000 organizations out there with “Veteran” in their name, it can be a little daunting.

My advice is to donate locally. I have worked with and seen the good work the following organizations do in the Naperville area. They are OSOTAmerica, Naperville Responds For Our Veterans, Judd Kendall VFW Post 3873 and American Legion Post 43.

If you ever question an organization, you can contact me or go to Charity Navigator and look at the 990 form they must file if they are a 501C3 charity.
