Customers asked to reduce electricity usage 3-7PM July 22

-

thermo-91-webUpdate, July 22, 2014 / Yesterday we held our thumb on the mercury bulb to set the outdoor thermometer at 91 degrees in order to show the projected forecast for a summer day with relatively normal temperatures in July.

At 3:48PM Tues., July 22, the indoor thermometer read 91 degrees outdoors, right on the money.

Will it climb any higher?

Thanks for conserving electricity and water today and every day. Still, remember to replenish fluids by drinking plenty of water.

And congratulations to the Chicago Cubs as the team was hot on this evening with their 6-0 victory over the San Diego Padres at Wrigley Field.

Energy-saving measures will save city, customers money in the long term

Temperatures on Tues., July 22, are expected to rise above 90 degrees.

With high temperatures expected in the area tomorrow, the City is requesting its electric customers voluntarily reduce their electric usage from 3 to 7PM on Tuesday, July 22. This request will help reduce the City’s peak electric usage figure for the month of July, helping save energy costs.

When customers voluntarily reduce electric usage, the City minimizes its monthly costs associated with purchasing electricity to meet the needs of its customers. Part of the City’s cost when purchasing electricity is based on the peak electric usage figure. Any cost savings experienced by the City can be passed through to customers in the form of lower rates. The City anticipates that due to tomorrow’s high temperatures, July’s highest electric demand from customers will be experienced during the aforementioned 3 to 7PM time frame.

Tips to help reduce energy consumption, if you so choose:

  • If health permits, set your air conditioner at 78 degrees or higher. Keep shades, blinds and curtains closed to help keep your home cool and make sure doors to the outside, garage or attic are firmly closed to help keep cool air in and hot air out.
  • Use major appliances such as washing machines, dryers or dishwashers before or after the 3 to 7PM  time frame.
  • Turn off and refrain from using all unnecessary lighting and electrical equipment. Some examples could include computers, swimming pool filters, hair dryers and vacuum cleaners, depending on your circumstances.
  • Consider cooking outside on a grill to avoid turning on the oven or stove.

The City’s electric utility does not anticipate any issues with an electric shortage on July 22; this voluntary measure is for cost-saving purposes. Please keep the health and safety needs of your family and pets in mind when choosing whether to conserve your electricity usage.
