At 2:17 AM on Friday morning (7/18/14), Naperville’s Public Safety Answering Point received a fire alarm activation from the building at 450 East Ogden Avenue. A single engine was dispatched to this alarm.
While that crew was enroute, PSAP received a 911 call from a passerby reporting lots of smoke coming out of the building. A general alarm assignment was subsequently dispatched, bringing a total of two trucks, three engines, a heavy rescue squad and two ambulances to the scene along with two command vehicles. The first fire unit arrived on the scene within 6 minutes and found heavy black smoke and fire coming from the rear of a single story restaurant. The incident was upgraded to a Box Alarm which brought in additional fire and command units.
Crews found heavy fire inside the building and initiated a defensive fire attack. As more crews arrived, they assisted with fire suppression efforts. As the fire was brought under control, a search of the building for occupants was initiated. Presently, crews remain on the scene and are checking for additional fire extension and conducting overhaul operations.
The damage to the building is extensive and is estimated to be approximately $400,000.00. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The Naperville Fire Department is being assisted at the scene by the Naperville Police Department, Naperville’s Emergency Management Agency, the DuPage County Fire Investigation Task Force and several other agencies. A Public Information Officer is on the scene providing additional media information. The Bolingbrook, Downers Grove, Lisle-Woodridge, Lockport, Plainfield, Wheaton and Winfield Fire Departments provided coverage at Naperville’s fire stations during this incident.
There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters.
