In February 2013, Rita Woker saw an article in the paper about the launch of I Support Community and its use of video storytelling.

“I immediately connected with I Support Community’s mission,” Woker recalls.

Woker was a magazine editor before becoming a stay-at-home mom and was interested in using her writing and editing skills to give back. After reading the article, she called Marion Ruthig, the founder, and offered to help.

Since that day, Woker has written more than six grant applications, assisted with fundraising events and been a great sounding board for Ruthig.

“Rita is very conscientious, dedicated and loyal,” Ruthig says. “It means a lot to me that our first volunteer is still with us.”

Woker also is active in I Support Community’s Coffee Campaign Crew program designed to educate community members about local charities. She attends the Morning Crew and brings her children to the Kids Crew.

“I’ve enjoyed taking my young sons to Kids Crew events. My husband and I put down roots in Naperville 13 years ago, and we want to pass along to our boys the importance of giving back to the community,” Woker says.

PN Ombudsman
An ombudsman is Scandinavian in origin dating back to Viking times; and refers to a community representative; usually acting independently on behalf of an organization, body of elected officials, or civic group. Thanks Scandinavia for inventing ombudsman.
