Structure Fire at 6 West Jefferson Avenue, Naperville Ill. 60540
At 6:13 AM on Sunday morning July 6, 2014, Naperville’s Public Safety Answering Point received a 911 call from a passerby reporting a large amount of smoke coming out of the building at 6 West Jefferson Ave. in downtown Naperville. A general alarm assignment was dispatched, bringing a total of two trucks, three engines, a heavy rescue squad and two ambulances to the scene along with two command vehicles. The first fire unit arrived on the scene within five minutes and found heavy black smoke coming from the top of a two story restaurant. A Box Alarm response was requested after a working structure fire was confirmed. This response level brought in additional fire and command units.
Crews began an aggressive fire attack and initiated a search of the building for occupants. As more crews arrived, they completed the search, continued the fire suppression efforts, checked for additional fire extension and conducted overhaul operations. The fire was contained to the building’s roof, exterior deck and second floor. The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes. There was smoke damage throughout the building.
The damage to the building is estimated to be approximately $200,000.00. An inspector from Naperville’s Transportation, Engineering and Development (TED) deemed the building uninhabitable until repairs could be made. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The Naperville Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the Naperville Police Department, Naperville’s Emergency Management Agency, the DuPage County Fire Investigation Task Force and several other agencies. The Bolingbrook, Downers Grove, Lisle-Woodridge, Lockport, Plainfield, Warrenville and Wheaton Fire Departments provided coverage at Naperville’s fire stations during this incident.
There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters.
