The Y – Summer is coming

-

Really, it is. I am writing this article in April with snow on the ground. It has been a crazy winter and spring, but the calendar says that warmer weather should be here shortly.

judy_ellertsonSo, school will be out in early June. Don’t get caught with your kids out of school with nothing to do. Your Naperville YMCAs have planned many camps and programs to appeal to all ages. Go to www.napervilleymcas.org for information.

Our camps are American Camping Association (ACA) accredited, which means that we maintain the highest standards regarding safety and program quality.

The majority of our staff is over 18 and return year after year. All staff are trained in Camp Leadership, CPR, First Aid, Child Abuse Prevention, Child Development and Group Management. All staff go through extensive background checks.

So, what’s new this year? Summer learning loss is a big concern. Many of our camps have partnered with our local libraries or the ACA on reading programs. We all know that reading is a fundamental skill that is the basis to comprehension and good study habits. Tutoring as part of the camp day is also available at some locations.

Several options for middle school students include traditional day camp and leadership development camps which include Counselor in Training, Camp E.D.G.E. and new this year Summer Adventure Voyager’s Camp.

These camps include team building, group dynamics, and conflict /resolution and leadership development activities. Camp E.D.G.E. and Summer Adventure also include community volunteer projects where kids will experience hands on projects at area not-for-profit organizations.

Many options for half day sports camps are available. This is a great way for kids to stay active and have fun in Ultimate Frisbee Camp, Dodgeball Camp, and Camp Recess to name a few.

I would like to put in a plug for our inaugural Naperville YMCAs Golf Outing taking place on May 12 at Cress Creek Country Club. Proceeds from this event will help fund camp scholarships.

Get your shorts out, summer is almost here!
