Artwork has always been a popular vacation souvenir—posters, paintings, photos and post cards—but technology now allows travelers to personalize their memories by turning their own photos into art.

“You no longer need to have exceptional photography skills or expensive equipment to capture images that can be artistically stylized, said Kevin Colbert, owner of Colbert Custom Framing & Art Printing. “Many of our customers bring us images taken with simple cameras or iPhones which we then turn into oil paintings, water colors, collages, sepia prints, even pop art.”
Hard copy photos and negatives also can be scanned, so even old family photos can be repaired and given new life as sentimental artwork.
All work is done in the company’s on-site printing and graphics studio at 1283 S. Naper Blvd. where giclee prints are created using a variety of mediums including canvas, photo chrome paper, heavy art paper, and poster paper.
The French word “giclée” (zhee-klay) is a feminine noun that means a spray or a spurt of liquid. The giclee printing process uses faderesistant, archival pigments and provides better color accuracy than other means of reproduction. The resulting art print is ready to be matted and framed—or stretched as a gallery-wrapped canvas—all done on-site in the Colbert Custom Framing & Art Printing production center.
