Most everyone has heard of the Y. In many households the YMCA is known as a place for “gym and swim” and kids programs. This is certainly true and we are proud of our heritage in teaching important leadership and life skills like swimming and providing a safe place for kids to learn, grow and play.
But this just scratches the surface. There is so much more to the Y than people realize. When compiling our annual report information I am reminded of the diverse, collective impact of Y programs.
Here are just a few examples of strengthening community that many people may not be aware.
In 2013 YMCA staff and volunteers…
- Prepared more than 60 Thanksgiving meal boxes for families to enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving meal
- Served 160 seniors at our 30th Annual Christmas Holiday Lunch
- Provided Christmas gifts to more than 150 needy families through our Angel Tree program
- Celebrated community and the holiday season with more than 400 community members at our Annual Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast
- Distributed more than 300 school supply kits to students in District 203 and 204
During this time the Y also…
- Served as the first job experience for more than 50 teens
- Provided opportunities for more than 1000 individuals to give back to their community
- Hosted free community movie nights in Central Park
- Provided leadership opportunities for 15 teens/preteens in our Counselor in Training Program
There are so many great organizations across Naperville that make this community a destination for families. At the YMCA we are privileged to work side by side with great people and these organizations to make a contribution to Naperville’s collective success.
