Almost nine years ago Norma Delahanty, who was retired, was looking for a charity in need of volunteers. A couple of her friends were volunteering at Naperville CARES, which interested her as she wanted to volunteer locally and assist people who needed “a push to get back on their feet.”

Norma began by taking client applications. Then about seven years ago, she started working on Naperville CARES CAR Program, which repairs donated vehicles and gives them to individuals who lack transportation to get to work. Her role involves taking client documents and obtaining additional information needed to approve clients for cars.

Once a client is approved for the car waiting list and a car becomes available, Norma works to match clients who have been waiting the longest with the car that best suits the size of their family and any other considerations they may have. The time that Norma spends volunteering at CARES each week varies. When CARES is fortunate to have a number of cars donated at once, she may spend a few days in the office. When donations are slow, she can complete much of the work on her home computer.

“Norma is a valued volunteer and an integral part of our Car Program committee,” said Maria McTarnaghan, Naperville CARES Program Manager. “With her attention to detail, she helps make the process for our clients smooth and seamless. She has an important role in the success of our Car Program, which has given over 550 cars away since its inception.”

While Norma has volunteered with other organizations, including her church, she feels she has found her niche with CARES and the Car Program.

“I know there were many times when someone would come to the church asking for aid,” said Norma. “CARES is a much more efficient way to help those in need as it coordinates and works with the churches and several other organizations to better assist people.”

Volunteer of the month is sponsored by Naperville Bank & Trust, serving Naperville with three locations, 555 Fort Hill Dr., 1205 S. Naper Blvd. and 5 S. Washington in the historic downtown post office. For more info, visit www.banknaperville.com.
