Book notes…  “A writer with soul,” (Los Angeles Times), Mitch Albom has carved out a special place among contemporary authors with such beloved New York Times bestsellers as Tuesdays with Morrie, For One More Day and The Five People You Meet in Heaven. The deep-seated humanism and extraordinary gift of storytelling that characterize Albom’s work is on full display in his much-anticipated new novel, The First Phone Call from Heaven. The story of a small Midwestern town whose residents begin to get phone calls from the departed, this compelling novel is equal parts mystery, love story, and an allegory about the power of belief.

What is false about hope? That’s the elemental question that comes into play when eight citizens of tiny Coldwater, MI. believe they have been contacted by the dead. A beloved sister, a mother, a mistreated former employee, a war hero son….others in the town hope it will soon be their turn to communicate with those who have passed, to hear their voices one more time, to get a second chance at fixing what has been left unsaid or undone. But is the phenomenon – which begins to attract believers from around the world – really true? Are these calls a miracle or a hoax? Sully Harding, a single father and disgraced navy pilot who is grieving the loss of his wife, is determined to prove the latter. Over the course of three months, culminating with the holiday season, as his once quiet hometown is overrun with media, worshipers, and religious or anti-religious zealots, Sully races desperately to uncover the source of these “heavenly” calls. But what he will discover is not the end of the story.

Woven throughout this heartfelt page-turner is the equally compelling, parallel story of Alexander Graham Bell and the invention of the telephone, which forever changed the way we connect with those we love. It provides a beautiful, real-life counterpoint and adds depth and intrigue to what is playing out in Coldwater. A virtuosic blend of history, love, and redemption, The First Phone Call from Heaven dares to challenge our notions of hope, faith, and responsibility to one another.
