The Y — Will 2013 be the year?

-

judy_ellertsonHappy New Year! Did you make your New Year’s resolutions? Did they sound similar to the goals you set in past years? How will you make this the year that you actually make it to the finish line.

I fall in to that start/stop mode. I have great intentions in the beginning of the year; I am motivated but after 3-4 weeks I fall back in to the same pattern.

If you are like me and millions of other people at this time of year, you strive to become more healthy but have a hard time sticking with it for the long term. Your goal might be to lose weight, stick to a workout regimen, eat out less, make healthier choices at the grocery store or limit your screen time. When you boil it down, it means you have to change your habits. We all know if you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got. The definition of insanity is repeating the same actions and expecting a different result.

So, how do we make it stick this year? Here are a few tips that I am incorporating into my life in 2013 and beyond:

  • Write your goals down and post them where they are visible
  • Make your goal realistic and time bound
  • Plan your week by scheduling your work outs in your calendar
  • Pack your lunch and healthy snacks so you are prepared to face the day
  • Purge your household of all your holiday goodies; don’t take them to work for your co-workers to eat, they don’t want or need them, throw them away.

Let’s invest in our health, take it personally, and make it a priority! The results we see and feel will be worth the efforts.
